What Million Dollar Weekend is
Million Dollar Weekend is a step-by-step process for starting a business in 48 hours without spending a dollar before you've made one. I wrote it with Tahl Raz. Portfolio (Penguin Random House) published it on January 30, 2024. It's 240 pages in three parts: Start It, Build It, Grow It.
Part 1 rebuilds your courage to start and ask. Part 2 walks you through the actual weekend: find a problem, shape it into a million dollar opportunity, and get three paying customers before you build anything. Part 3 shows you the growth machine I used at Mint, AppSumo, and TidyCal: social media for growth, email for profit.
Every chapter ends with a challenge. Do them and you finish with a validated business, not a notebook of ideas. Read it this weekend. Start Friday.
The 48-hour process
Three steps: find a problem you can solve, craft a solution with million dollar potential, get paid before you build. The long version, with worked examples, is in How to validate a business idea in 48 hours.
Friday: find a problem (the Customer First Approach). You don't start with an idea. You start with a customer. Your own annoyances, your friends' complaints, things people already pay for badly. Customers don't care about your ideas. They care whether you solve their problem.
Saturday: shape it (the One-Minute Business Model). Pick your three favorite ideas and run the napkin math. How many people have this problem? What would they pay? Revenue minus cost equals profit. Can it reach $1 million? Most ideas fail in sixty seconds. Good. You just saved six months.
Sunday: validate it (the 48-Hour Money Challenge). Get three paying customers in 48 hours. Not "interested." Paying. Start with your Dream Ten, the ten people most likely to buy. Ask for money before you build. Three yeses, you have a business. Fewer, you have a victorious failure that cost nothing. Run the next idea next weekend.
Before the weekend, Part 1 gets you ready: the Dollar Challenge (ask someone for $1 today), your Freedom Number (the monthly income that lets you quit), and the Coffee Challenge (ask for 10% off and survive the no).
